Huck Group Journal #2-Conformity vs. Individuality

When it comes to Huck's moral choices throughout the novel, Huck deals with complex decisions and must trust his heart or trust his head in making those life choices.

This is one of the hardest things in life to come to grips with.  With that in mind, much of that conflict deals with conformity to society's rules versus what we individually feel/choose to do.  Answer the following GROUP JOURNAL #2 with that in mind.

WORTH 10 POINTS DUE BY 1/30

Which do you think our society values more: individuality or conformity?  Why? Explain.

  1. Society prefers conformity because we like to fit in and relate to what's going on around us rather then expressing ourselves. People always say they want to be original but, they actually want to fit in and not stand out in a crowd because people are scared of what other people will think. #sophisticated #Tara

  2. Whether we like it or not, our society values conformity. For example, when it comes to making decisions, we look to others before we make our own and society expects us all to agree and if we don't, we're seen as selfish. People mayimportant, but our society expects us live in a common pattern and if we try to deviate from that set path, it is frowned upon.

Society always seems to value the individual. For example, the moto X and iphone 5C promote the ability to customize your phone so you can be more individual. Features and colors on cars do the same. Another example would be the wide variety of music genre that people can use to define themselves. Even though society values the individual, members of society still conform, even possibility to the idea of individualism. However, the /value/ is definitely placed on individuality.

  4. In all honesty, society values conformity more. Even though in most aspects we believe and say that individuality is better than conformity, but the reality people rather you follow others for simplicities sake. Society values conformity more because the majority of people think the same way or in patterns. We study how the human brain thinks so that we can use these patterns to our advantages. Many different cultures want people to follow the beliefs of a god or a group of gods. But, I believe when an individual comes out of the crowd and presents an idea or a thing, people either loves them or denies them. Its easier to deal with the simple people than to deal with the outgoing ones.

  5. Many people follow the crowds, and care too much what people think of them. Society makes us think that being alike is the right thing to do. If your different your weird. But we believe you sgould just be yourself and express yourself as you want to. Not as society wants you to.

  6. We believe that our choices are dictated by society more than individual thoughts. Individuals have a chance to express themselves, but while we strive for freedom, society believes that you shouldn't break the mold. Different is bad, and if you are out of the normal, you are suspect to ridicule by your peers. You want to be free and you want opportunity, but you are shaped by your environment and cultural beliefs, and sometimes you can't change those aspects.

  7. We think as a group that society values conformity. There are many cliques where if one person dislikes something or wears different clothes then the others, they will be made fun of for it. If one person is different people might get worried others will follow and then they'll be alone. An example is with girls that wear ugs, drink Starbucks, and have iPhones. Everyone wants to fit in and jot he left out.

  8. We believe our society values conformity more because when someone different from everyone else, they are more likely to be judged. Also, our society likes to go with the flow more than sticking out in a crowd. And today people are more easily influenced by others, and often times someone unique is doinsomething out of the ordinary, it makes others feel uncomfortable, which is why society values conformity more than individuality. Society desires individuality  but settle for conformity. Society looks down upon others that are different. This is because of jealousy, and wanting to belong. We're afraid of being so different that we're the outcast so we all just try to be the same.

  10. Society desire conformity because everyone wants to fit in with their friends and their scared of what there friends would think if they had a different answer or outcome that was different from there friends. Everyone feels more comfortable just fitting in. Even though people are trying to be themselves, but when times comes, people get nervous and they just start conforming and fitting in with what other people say even if it's not what they were thinking.

  11. We think society today values individuality over conformity because people in today's world want to do whatever they want without people telling them no. For example, the government. The government wants to put a set amount of limitations on each individual person not allowing them to branch off with there own ideas. But today we need that in some cases, we need individuals to go off and give us there ideas because that could be what we need for a better world today. That one person who didn't have to worry about limitations was able to better us as a whole in some way. An example of someone who individually changed us as a whole without society was someone like Steve Jobs or Albert Einstein. Both those men's went off of there own imagination and individually changed life today. Albert with the concept of the light bulb, society told him no, it wasn't possible but after failing several times he was able to accomplish it. The lightbulb today is a great success. In regards to Steve Jobs, his ideas on the computer changed society. People thought he was crazy but after a period of time he was able to accomplish and innovate the future for the computer. Today Apple is a huge company with many ideas that changed man kind.

  12. We believe that individuality and conformity are very important to our society. One has to be very individual and unique to achieve success. They must stray from the crowd in order to be recognized. For example, Lady Gaga or Katy Perry had to be different to stand out of the crowd. After you attained success though, society expects you to conform into whatever group you belong in. For example, everyone freaks out at Miley Cyrus because she's different. They expect her to conform into singers who are more sophisticated.Anuhya Erica Kellie so young

  13. As much as our society says everyone should be different, it does not accept those that as truly different. In fact society shuns those that are not within a range of acceptability. And for the must part people don't question it because they are afraid of people think of them. Due to this very few people are willing to step out side the border that define normal.

  14. We think that society values conformity of individuality. We think that a lot of people today are afraid to be themselves because they are afraid that they'll be judged. They are afraid to be their own person. People want to fit in and the easiest way to do that is to be like everybody else. If the environment around us was more comfortable and less judgmental, then we think that people would start to be themselves and stop acting like someone that they're not. People wouldn't be afraid of being teased or made fun of.

I think society accepts conformity better because it is the general thing that is going on so if everyone is doing the same thing it is more likely to be accepted be everyone. Even though most people conform the ones who truly succeed are individualists who might not be accepted. When Huck chose to lie to the slave catchers instead of turning Jim in, he was individualistic because most people in the South would have turned him in. Huck was a better person for protecting Jim, and most people would like Huck more after he did this.
