Huck Group Journal #3-Privilege

How much does money influence our lives?  What does it mean to be privileged?  If you know a peer is rich or poor, does it affect your opinion or expectations on how that person will behave?  Are your expectations usually correct?  Elaborate.

  1. Money rules a lot of our lives, and it affects how people see us. Many people abide by the stereotypes and think that just because someone has a lot of money that they are rude, snobbish, or condescending. However, these expectations are not always right. Human behavior isn't influenced just by money, but how people are raised entirely, because you could be poor, yet be raised to be rude to others, or be wealthy and be raised to be kind and giving.

We depend on money for everything. Even basic necessities such as food and water require an exchange of currency today. Being privileged means to have the opportunity to do something others cannot. I think we have all learned to disregard wealth when it comes to characterizing others. I do not really set expectations for people based on wealth.

  3. Some people base their whole interpretation on someone based on money. To be privileged is to have more then another person without working for it. If you know someone is rich when you meet them you might try to get on their good side to seek benefits. Rich people tend to act in a way that's much different then a poor person which could be good or bad. They could be really nice and generous or they can be a rich snob.

  4. Money influences our lives greatly. However, Some place a greater importance on money than others. Being privileged is having luxurays that others don't such as not having to worry about saving money for college or retirement. There are many different levels of privilege, and we as Americans are pretty privileged compared to others.

  5. yolo swaq tara,
Being privileged means having more opportunities. Money influences how much stuff you can buy and how you can spend your time. The more money you have, the more opportunities you have. Someone's wealth or status can affect how others perceive them, because they have more money to get whatever they want. A lot of times this is a stereotype, but often times tis' TRU.

  6. I think that money greatly influences the way you go about life. To be privleged in life means that you have a roof over your head, and food on the table. If a peer is rich or poor I do not think they should act differently because of money. My expectations are usually correct because I keep people at a high standard to be civilized

  7. We make all our decisions based off of how much money we have or will have. The idea of being privileged is to never have to worry about or wonder if they won't have enough money to get byor to be born into a family with a lot of money. We feel that the expectations of a person who is rich is that they would be snooty and wound up tight and we know that these expect ions are not always the case that their are nice privileged people though some may also be rich and snooty.

  8. Money only influences are lives as much as we let it to a point. Once someone is able to support themselves then money will only play as big of a role as they let it. To be privileged is to have money, influence, or power over someone else. This does not change who you are unless you let it. If a peer is rich or not only changes how they are view if the person viewing them values money or not. As a group we did not see the value in money but some people do. There is a view on people that are rich or poor of how they act but as a group we try to avoid listening to those until we have seen the person for who they are.

  9. Money is a big influence in our lives. Everybody wants the newest/best thing. Being privileged means that you have enough to get by happily in life. Some people do not have this privledge. Yes we think it does effect our opinion on someone if they are rich or poor. If someone is rich, some people mayb think they are always spoiled. If someone is poor, people might think they made bad choices in their lives but that may not be the case. Usually the accusations are wrong but may be correct in some cases.

Money influences our lives a lot because it determines our social class and affects where we live and what kind of stuff we have or can do. Being privileged is being able to get things that you don't necessarily need and receive benefits. No, because most people are respectful despite their social class. Our expectation isn't always correct because there are some people who let their social class affect their life. For example, a poor person may believe that they have no obligation to contribute to society because they have money. A rich person may believe that they are above everyone else because they are very wealthy. However, this generally isn't the case and people don't let their social class affect who they are.

Money influences our lives in different ways and depending on the person. It can go as far as corrupting the minds of others and sometimes money isn't valued as much by other people. Being privileged is not based on the amount of money you have, yet it is due to what you have to do to get your wealth.

  12. We think that money influences our lives a lot. We depend on money for a lot of things. Its a great thing to be privileged, but if you think about it, more people in the world are under privileged than privileged. I sometimes think that if you have money, you will behave more in a cocky uptight way. I'm not always right but if someone has a good amount of money they will act differently than people who are not so privileged. Privileged does not always mean money, it could mean having supportive friends and family, some people don't have as much of a supportive family and friends.

  13. We think money has a deep impact on our lives. Most teens today are worried about their career and money is a big factor when it comes to deciding on a job. Americans have a different definition of privileged because we are always wanting more, something better. While less privileged people around the world think of us as kings. We would judge people's actions based on how wealthy they are because we might think we are better than them or we are jealous of them. Sometimes we are right because some rich people can be snotty and brag about their stuff, but their are some who defy their stereotypes.

  14. Yes, money does influence our lives to a certain extent. We are raised with iPads and iPhones and many other devices that normal middle class kids in the U.S. Don't have. This influences in a great way because we have many more opportunities to learn. Being privileged means to have access to a wide range of resources. Although money does influence us, it doesn't change our expectations of our peers. We expect everyone to treat us with respect and they will be treated equally.
